Brain Imaging
Center
of Economic Excellence
Inception:
2002-2003
University Collaborators:
The University of South Carolina
The Medical University of South Carolina
About the CoEE:
Understanding the function of the human brain can help treat many debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. Important to this area of science are non-invasive tools for imaging the brain such as magnetic resonance imaging or MRI.
In South Carolina, the University of South Carolina (USC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) are working in partnership with Palmetto Health and the Greenville Hospital System (collaboratively called “Health Sciences South Carolina”) to advance research in brain imaging. The collaborators have formed the Brain Imaging Center of Economic Excellence or CoEE.
The Brain Imaging CoEE leverages USC’s expertise in cognitive neuroscience, computer science, engineering and public health and MUSC’s international reputation in brain imaging and new brain therapies. Techniques being explored at the CoEE will enable individualized diagnosis and treatment of brain degeneration.
Research conducted by the Brain Imaging CoEE has the potential to yield breakthroughs in a number of industries such as medical device manufacturing, MRI hardware technology, and software development. The CoEE will also train postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate and undergraduate students in this emerging technology.
