Lipidomics, Pathobiology and Therapy Center of Economic Excellence

Inception:
2009

About the CoEE:

This CoEE takes advantage of MUSC’s strength in the area of lipidomics, which involves the study of lipids within biological systems. Lipids, along with carbohydrates and proteins, are one of the principle components of living cells and include fats, waxes, and similar compounds.

The CoEE will translate the basic lipidomics research occurring at MUSC into an understanding of how lipids play a role in health problems such as cancer, inflammation, and diabetes. Researchers will then use that understanding to identify new targets for diagnostics or treatments for these illnesses.

The CoEE has filed three invention disclosures, two focused on detection and monitoring of bladder cancer and one focused on blood screenings and identification of disease biomarkers.

The CoEE is working to generate additional external research funding for MUSC’s lipid research program and could lead to the development of patents that can be licensed, sold, or serve as the basis for new start-up companies.

Funding level:
$5 million

"The companies we are working with benefit because we are helping them to build better products. They also hire many of our graduates. South Carolina benefits because these companies are either located in South Carolina or they are spending some of their research budget in the state. The presence of an institution doing research relevant to industry also helps attract new companies to this area."

Dr. Todd Hubing
