South Carolina is committed to building a vibrant knowledge-based economy-one that will result in higher-paying jobs and, ultimately, a better standard of living and quality of life for its citizens. A cornerstone of this commitment is the visionary Centers of Economic Excellence Program, established by the S.C. General Assembly in 2002.
The CoEE Program is investing in talent and infrastructure at South Carolina's three research universities to drive economic development. The CoEE Program supports research in areas that will help South Carolina companies grow, attract new business to the state, build a technology-rich economy, and create more opportunities for South Carolinians.
The CoEE Program mission statement:
The South Carolina Centers of Economic Excellence Program serves the
public interest by creating incentives for the state's research
universities, in cooperation with other institutions of higher education
in the state, to raise capital from non-state sources to fund endowments
for specialized research professorships. These professorships in turn
serve as the nucleus for unique, university-based research centers which
cultivate critical, public-private industrial partnerships, expand the
state's knowledge base, create well-paying jobs, and enhance economic
opportunities and improve the quality of life for the people of South
Carolina.
